OSHA proposed update to the HCS (USA)

OSHA proposed update to the HCS (USA)

On 5th February 2021, The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) issued a proposed rule to update their existing Hazard Communications Standard (HCS) to align with the GHS Revision 7.

The proposed rule aims to:

  • Increase worker protections
  • Reduce the incidence of chemical related illnesses and injuries in the workplace
  • Improve information of labels and SDS for hazardous chemicals
  • Improve alignment with other federal agencies and Canada
  • Improve the circulation of hazard information to workers

OSHA established the HCS in 1983 to provide a standardised approach to workplace hazard communication. The HCS was last updated in 2012 to align with the GHS Revision 3.
