An update on IChEMS

The Australian Government’s newly passed standard—the Industrial Chemicals Environmental Management Standard (IChEMS)—aims to assist industry and government in managing the environmental risks of chemicals.
The IChEMs aims to provide a standardised approach to the use, storage, handling and disposal of chemicals.
It is being delivered in two stages. The first stage is already complete, and it included the creation of the legislation. The Industrial Chemicals Environment Bill 2020 passed both houses of parliament in March 2021. The second stage looks at incorporating the IChEMS register into each jurisdiction’s laws.
Consistency in legislation across the country aims to ensure that chemicals are more easily regulated and managed, resulting in increased safety of human health and protection of the environment.
